Wednesday Nights and the Voice we Never Forget
For many of us growing up in the 1970s, Wednesday evenings meant one thing — Binaca Geetmala on Radio Ceylon, at 8 pm. Presented by the unforgettable Ameen Sayani, (1932 – 2024), this weekly countdown of popular Hindi film songs had us eagerly waiting to discover which song would climb to the top of the list. And who could forget his distinctive, warm voice and his famous greeting, “Behno aur Bhaiyo”? His voice had a personality of its own — instantly recognisable, friendly and full of charm. In those days, we gathered around the radio, listened to our favourite songs and waited for each new announcement with excitement.
There were no streaming apps or instant playlists, just one special evening, one familiar voice and a world of music that brought millions of listeners together. Those Wednesday nights remain etched in our memories as a truly golden era of radio entertainment.

In the 1970s, around 9 pm, many of us looked forward to Hawa Mahal on All India Radio’s Vividh Bharati. This popular 15-minute programme brought Hindi short stories, comedy sketches and dramatic plays to life through wonderful acting, dialogue and sound effects.
With no television serials or online entertainment to turn to, we sat by the radio and let our imagination create every scene. The familiar opening tune, the suspense and the laughter made Hawa Mahal a memorable part of our evenings. Those were simpler times, when just fifteen minutes of radio could provide an entire world of entertainment!
