Remember those days when a new Bollywood film or a hit song was the talk of the town? From the craze around Bobby and the magic of Sholay to the unforgettable voices of Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar, films and music were a big part of our lives. Let’s turn back the clock and relive the movies, melodies and stars that made our growing-up years so special.

Bollywood at its peak in 1970's

The mid-1970s were a golden time for Bollywood. For those of us growing up in India, going to the cinema, listening to songs on the radio and humming our favourite tunes were all part of everyday life.
Amitabh Bachchan was becoming a superstar with films like Zanjeer (1973), Deewaar (1975) and Sholay (1975). Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Shashi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor were also hugely popular, while Hema Malini, Rekha, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi and Sharmila Tagore added their own glamour to the screen.

And then came Bobby (1973)! It created a craze among youngsters, with Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia bringing a fresh, fashionable and glamorous style that felt ahead of its time. People fell in love with the romance, clothes and songs, and some fans reportedly watched it 50 or even 100 times!

Films like Chupke Chupke, Sholay and Amar Akbar Anthony gave us laughter, action and unforgettable dialogues. The music was just as special, with Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle giving us classics like Yeh Dosti, Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko and Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein.

For the MBHS Class of 1976, these films and songs bring back memories of school days, friendships and simpler times. Even today, one familiar tune can take us straight back to those days!
